A Photo Shoot, a Press Check and American History

Sandwiched between a photo shoot and press check in High Point and Hickory, North Carolina, flourish and cabinet manufacturer client American Woodmark representatives visited the famous Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Everyone celebrated the July 4th holiday with a house and roof-top tour of the 250-room French Renaissance-style chateau that was originally the Vanderbilt’s primary residence. flourish Principal, Henry Frey, believes Biltmore to be “a fascinating insight into home fashion, architecture and landscape design from the late 19th century.”

brrrrrrrr.

flourish’s Director of Client Services, Anthony Hughes, recently subjected himself to sub-zero temperatures all for the sake of…fun?! Anthony, who says he typically “runs hot,” wasn’t bothered by the average 25-degree Fahrenheit interior temp when he visited Quebec’s Ice Hotel. In fact, the chill in the air was well worth the incredible experience of staying at the hotel, which is reconstructed every year using 500 tons of ice and 15,000 tons of snow. Maybe this native Brit is more at home in Cleveland than we thought (pre-Spring thaw, that is…).

To Florida and back…with photos to show for it.

Despite rumors that Henry was all about “fun in the sun” when he traveled to Orlando in December on a photo shoot, we have evidence that he was having fun while he was working. The evidence, of course, is the fabulous photography for flourish client American Woodmark, one of the largest U.S. cabinet manufacturers, and their Timberlake brand. While on the shoot, Henry spearheaded photo art direction, styling and production services. The photos feature Timberlake Cabinetry in The New American Home 2008, the official showhome of the International Builders’ Show. Look for more of the results to be featured in Timberlake’s quarterly magazine, Portfolio—highlights coming soon to a flourish Blog near you.

Off the clock: How Steve spent his summer vacation

Perhaps the phrase “family vacation” conjures for you the soothing sounds of the beach or the magical world of Disney. For flourish Designer, Steve Shuman, it recalls the sights and sounds of Montana’s Glacier National Park. Vacationing here is a tradition started by his mother’s family in the 1930s.

Steve, his wife Kellie and their 1-year old daughter, Kennedy, are keeping this tradition alive and recently returned from a trip to the “Treasure State.” In fact, Steve’s entire extended family headed to the Pacific Northwest. A phenomenon known as “the converging Shumans,” resulted in the entire Shuman clan meeting at the Belgrade, MT home of Steve’s brother, Sam and his family.

Their days were spent at Montana Wilderness School of the Bible; a college level school that is operated by Steve’s Aunt and Uncle, and Apgar Campground nestled on the shore of Lake McDonald. Day hikes, including one across the famous Highline Trail, were highlights of the trip for Steve. “Everyone was together and Kennedy giggled with every bounce of her Baby Bjorn,” he recalled with a grin. Montana is called “Big Sky Country” and hiking the Highline Trail always provides proof that this is no misnomer. “Everything is just so spread out. The horizon goes on forever,” he described.

Planning a trip to Montana? Must see sights and destinations, according to Steve, include: Glacier National Park, Izaak Walton Inn for a great meal, and one of the highlights of Glacier National Park; a drive down the engineering marvel, known as Going-to-the-Sun Road. Whatever your plans, prepare for breathtaking adventures. And who knows? You just might have a Shuman sighting or hear a bear like Steve’s wife, Kellie, swears she did!

It's all Greek to Henry

When flourish principal Henry Frey travels, he doesn’t take the typical tourist route. Case in point: Henry traveled to Greece this summer as a chaperone for 25 Westminster College students.

The group toured various Roman ruins with an archeological lecturer, with the highlight being a private tour of the Parthenon. Henry enjoyed access to behind-the-scenes areas of the ancient monument, and was fascinated by details of the restoration project that’s currently underway; one interesting fact is that the marble being used in the Parthenon’s reconstruction is from the same quarry as the marble used in its original construction in 5th Century BC.
